2005-06-22 - 10:20 a.m. WOOHOO!!!! It's official - I'M GOING TO UGANDA!!! This may seem random to those who aren't involved in my day-to-day life, and even to some who are, so I'll explain. I'm joining the Peace Corps next year, but before I commit two years of my life to living amongst the world's poorest conditions, I wanted to make sure I was up for it. So, I applied to a Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip, and I found out yesterday that I got in! Pretty neat, especially since the trip was full and they added an extra spot so I could go. I will spend two weeks in August (8/11-8/25) in Uganda building houses with seventeen other people from around the world. We will live without running water, plumbing or electricity. We will spent up to fourteen hours a day building and sleep under mosquito nets in open air cabins. All this, and I've never even slept outdoors! On that note, anyone who reads my blog who is nearby and who would like to take me camping - it would be much appreciated. I think it would be best if I at least learned to live without a microwave for a day before I tried to get through this. I am so excited - for the first time in my life, I am help people in need with my own two hands...I hope this is the start of a life of service.
